The Sounders Wednesday selected forwards Chad Barrett and Corey Hertzog in Stage Two of the Major League Soccer re-entry draft. Seattle has rights to both and may negotiate new contracts. The Sounders took Barrett from the New England Revolution and Hertzog from the Vancouver Whitecaps.
Seattle took the 28-year-old Barrett with its first pick (13th overall). A nine-year MLS veteran, Barrett scored two goals with two assists in 19 appearances for the Revolution last season. He began his pro career with the Chicago Fire in 2005 and joined Toronto FC in 2008.
Barrett spent two seasons with the LA Galaxy (2011-12) before New England selected him in the 2012 ren-entry. Overall, he has scored 44 goals with 29 assists in 211 career appearances.
“Chad is a hard-working forward who has good experience in MLS,” said sporting director Chris Henderson. “He has a nose for the goal and is able to play multiple positions. Chad has represented the USA at multiple levels, including a cap with the full team. Sigi (Schmid) has coached Chad in the past with the youth national team.”
The Sounders took Hertzog, 23, with its second pick (32nd overall). A Penn State University grad, Hertzog was drafted 13th overall by the New York Red Bulls in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft. He made five appearances over two seasons with the Red Bulls and started six of seven appearances for the Whitecaps in 2013, scoring one goal with one assist.
“Corey is a forward we followed while he was scoring goals at Penn State,” said Henderson. “He has been a proven goal scorer in college and while on loan in the USL with Wilmington. His attacking movement is good and he has an instinct to find the ball in the penalty box.”
