The Sounders Wednesday re-signed 41-year-old goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann, who started four matches during the 2013 regular season, allowing four goals with a 2-2-0 record.Hahnemann has made nine appearances for Seattle across all competitions since joining the franchise Sept. 14, 2012 after a long career in the English Premier League.
“We are looking forward to having Marcus back in a Sounders FC uniform,” said Sounders FC Sporting Director Chris Henderson. “He will continue to add veteran leadership and has proven to be solid between the posts. Marcus has had a fantastic career for club and country and we are proud he will be staying with his hometown team.”
Hahnemann spent 13 years in the EPL playing for Fulham FC, Reading FC, Wolverhampton and Everton FC, making more than 300 appearances. He also has nine caps for the U.S. National Team and was a member of the 2006 and 2010 World Cup teams.
Hahnemann began his MLS career in 1997 with the Colorado Rapids, where he played three seasons, posting a 39-25 record in 66 appearances before joining Fulham in 1999. Hahnemann then moved to Reading, where he made more than 250 appearances from 2002-2009. He also played for Wolverhampton from 2009-11 and Everton from 2011-12.
The Seattle native began his pro career with the A-League Sounders in 1994 after a prolific career for Seattle Pacific University, where he was a three-time All-America and helped SPU to the 1993 Division II National Championship. The six-foot-three goalkeeper was an All-Star in his rookie year and led the Sounders to the A-League title in 1996.

A good move. You can never have enough experienced goalkeeping, especially one with Hahnemann’s bonafides. He’s been places the vast majority of his teammates have only dreamed of going. Given Stefan Frei’s recent injury history when he was with Toronto, Marcus may be needed for more than just leadership this year.
I imagine Hahnemann is considered to the the backup goalie because of his age. His experience is invaluable however and being local is a plus. Looking forward to what kind of moves the club does to replace Gspurning.
