Throughout non-conference play, the Washington Huskies ranked last in the Pac-12 in scoring defense, allowing more than 80 points per game, worst of the Lorenzo Romar era and nearly the worst in any era (82.5 in 1999). But in their first three league games, the Huskies held Arizona State, Arizona and Utah to an average of 64.3 points in winning two of the three.
Against Utah Wednesday, Washington held the visitors to 41.5 percent shooting, gave up one 3-pointer in 16 attempts and forced a pair of shot-clock violations in a 59-57 victory. Washington still ranks 12th in the Pac-12 in scoring defense, but in league play it ranks second to Arizona’s absurd 43.5.
The Huskies host Colorado in a nooner Sunday. The Buffaloes were not on anyone’s radar to start the season, but have methodically worked their way into a No. 15 national ranking in the latest Associated Press poll (Colorado is the fourth ranked opponent on Washington’s schedule; UW 16-11 against ranked foes at home under Romar).
After a season-opening loss to Baylor, Colorado reeled off a 10-game winning streak, which included a 75-72 win over Kansas, that Oklahoma State snapped 78-73. Off to its best start since the 1968-69 season, Colorado is coming off a 71-70 overtime win over Washington State in the Spokane Arena.
Ranked No. 8 nationally in RPI, Colorado features four double-digit scorers in Spencer Dinwiddie (15.2), Askia Booker (13.9), Josh Scott (13.6) and Xavier Johnson (10.3). Scott is the team’s leading rebounder at 9.4 and had six of his team-high 19 points against WSU in overtime.
SERIES: Dates to Dec. 30, 1953, when Colorado defeated Washington 81-60 in the Big Seven Tournament in Kansas City. Washington won the last meeting 64-54 Jan. 10, 2013. C.J. Wilcox scored 25 for the Huskies and Scott Suggs 13. Spencer Dinwiddie tallied 15 for the Buffaloes.
