The Mariners Wednesday traded OF Carlos Peguero to the Kansas City Royals for a player to be named later or cash considerations. The Mariners designated the 24-year-old for assignment Jan. 16 after they signed free agent catcher John Buck. Originally signed by Seattle as a non-drafted free agent in 2005, Peguero appeared in 65 games for the Mariners from 2011-13.
Peguero saw action in two games for the Mariners last season, hitting .195 in six at-bats. He also played in 118 games for AAA Tacoma, batting .260 with 18 home runs. Peguero had his longest stint with Seattle in 2011. He appeared in 46 games and hit .196 with six home runs.
Peguero’s wife, Maria Jacqueline Peguero, was charged in October with using a credit card belonging to Felix Hernandez’s wife to rack up nearly $180,000 in charges from the Saks Fifth Avenue website. The upscale goods were delivered to Peguero’s Fife, WA., apartment sometime between June 26, 2012, and Oct. 9, 2012.
The New York department store started to investigate the large purchases — more than 60 — because of the inconsistency between the billing and shipping addresses.
Maria Peguero is still facing three counts of wire fraud, which carries a possible penalty of up to 20 years in prison.
Peguero was out of AAA options and would have had to make the club coming out of spring training.
The Mariners have also signed veteran RHP Scott Baker, 32, who missed most of the past two seasons because of Tommy John ligament replacement surgery in his pitching elbow, to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training. He has pitched 166 games for the Minnesota Twins and Chicago Cubs.

Hope for Carlos’ sake he can follow how Raul Ibanez and Gil Meche did when they left the M’s for the Royals and become a solid player, maybe an All-Star. Though the past few seasons that seems to be the pattern when young players leave the club.
