University of Washington basketball coach Lorenzo Romar admitted after Thursday night’s 78-69 loss at Utah that his Huskies “may have run out of gas” in the second half. UW held a lead with 10:49 to play, but couldn’t keep up with the Utes at high altitude (4,800 feet), dropping its second of three road games in a row.
The Huskies move to a higher altitude (5,200 feet) in Boulder, where they face once-ranked Colorado, coming off a 68-63 win over Washington State Wednesday.
The teams met in Seattle a month ago and Washington came away with a 71-54 victory over a team ranked 15th nationally. The Buffaloes dictated the pace for much of the first half, but struggled to find a rhythm after losing junior guard Spencer Dinwiddie, their best player, to a season-ending knee injury. Colorado is 3-3 since.
The Buffaloes are led by Askia Booker’s 14.0 scoring average. Josh Scott and Xavier Johnson follow at 13.8 and 10.9. Scott leads with 8.8 rebounds per game.
The Huskies allowed an average of 79.2 points per game during non-conference play. Over their first four Pac-12 games, that number dropped to 61.7 as Washington won three times. In the six games since, four of them losses, UW has allowed 78.0.
“We’ve slid back,” Romar said after Thursday’s loss. “We’ve got to fix that.
The Huskies play five of their final seven regular-season games at Alaska Airlines Arena, where they are 11-2 and have won six straight.
SERIES: Dates to Dec. 30, 1953, when Colorado defeated Washington 81-60 in the Big Seven Tournament in Kansas City. Washington won the most recent meeting, 71-54, Jan. 12 in Seattle as C.J. Wilcox scored 31 points. Colorado lost its best player, Spencer Dinwiddie, to a season-ending knee injury.
