GAME: Stanford (15-7 overall, 6-4 Pac-12) at Washington (13-11 overall, 5-6 Pac-12). WHEN: Wednesday, 6 p.m., Alaska Airlines Arena. TYPE: Conference. MEETING: 140th (Cardinal leads 71-68). RANKINGS: Neither school ranked. COACHES: Johnny Dawkins, Stanford; Lorenzo Romar, Washington. TV: ESPN2. RADIO: KJR 950 AM

Normally unflappable Lorenzo Romar seemed flummoxed Sunday after his Washington Huskies started with a whimper and ended with a thud in a 91-65 loss to the Colorado Buffaloes in Boulder. The 26-point clobbering matched UW’s largest of the Pac-12 season (Cal, Jan. 15) and represented a 43-point swing from the first meeting between the schools, a 71-54 win Jan. 12.

“I wouldn’t have guessed that if we were going to come out on the short end of it that it would be like this,” Romar said. “I thought we would be better. It was not a good night for the Huskies.”

Washington has dropped three in a row and five of seven, but will play five of its final seven games at Alaska Airlines Arena, where the Huskies have had success. They are 11-2 and winners of 14 of their last 17.

Washington hostsStanford and California this week, starting with the Cardinal Wednesday. UW dropped a 12-point decision at Stanford Jan. 18, days after the 26-point loss to the Bears in Berkeley.

“We have to make hay in our barn, as they say,” Romar told gohuskies.com. “If there was ever a time to make a run, we’ve got to do it.”

The Huskies will be able to do it only if senior guard C.J. Wilcox, who failed to bring it Sunday, brings it this week. Wilcox scored a season-low eight points on 2-for-10 shooting (0-for-7 from 3-point range) against Colorado. Wilcox’s previous season low was nine points — against Stanford.

The Cardinal has four double-figure scorers led by Chasson Randle (18.8), who torched the Huskies for 33 points in the last meeting. Dwight Powell follows at 15.2 with Anthony Brown at 12.6 and Josh Huestis at 11.1. Powell has been particularly tough on Washington, averaging 12.0 points and 6.2 rebounds in five career contests.

SERIES: Dates to Feb. 1, 1916, when Washington won 35-19 at Palo Alto. The Huskies have dominated in recent years, taking nine of the past 11 meetings, but Stanford won the last one, Jan. 18 in Palo Alto, 79-67 as Chasson Randle burned the Huskies for 33 points. Nigel Williams-Goss paced the Huskies with 17 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists.

  1. Graduation has hurt the Dawgs this season and its a young roster. I can take a pass on losing to the Buffs but the way they lost was disturbing. They were without their leading scorer but wisely targeted CJ who torched they the last time they met when they were upset. At this point I’d just be happy if they make a tournament.
