The Mariners signed LHP Randy Wolf to a minor league contract and invited the 37-year-old veteran to major league spring training in Peoria, AZ. Wolf, who did not pitch last season while recovering from Tommy John surgery on his left elbow, joined the club Thursday for the first workout involving pitchers and catchers.
It was the second Tommy John surgery of Wolf’s career. He also underwent the ligament replacement procedure in 2005.
Wolf last pitched in the majors in 2012, combining to make 30 appearances (26 starts) with the Milwaukee Brewers and Baltimore Orioles. Over the course of his 14-season career, Wolf has appeared in 376 games (368 starts) with the Phillies (1999-2006), Dodgers (2007, 2009), Padres (2008), Astros (2008), Brewers (2010-12) and Orioles (2012).
Wolf’s 368 starts are fifth-most among active pitchers and his 2,268 innings pitched are sixth-most.
In his career, Wolf has logged seven seasons with 30 or more starts (last: 33 in 2011) and six seasons with 200-or-more innings pitched (last: 212.1 IP in 2011). Over a three-season stretch from 2009-2011 with the Dodgers and Brewers, Wolf combined to go 37-29 with a 3.70 ERA, while throwing at least 200 innings and 30 starts in each season.
Wolf was an All-Star in 2003 when he went 16-10 with a 4.23 ERA in 33 starts for the Phillies. He has pitched in four postseason series (last: 2011 with Milwaukee).
Wolf was selected by the Phillies in the second round of the 1997 June draft from Pepperdine University.
