As Howie Stalwick’s story for Sportspress Northwest describes, Ken Bone will make his final appearance at Alaska Airlines Arena Friday as Washington State’s head basketball coach. The Cougars are apparently set to relieve Bone of his duties.
WSU is 9-17 this year, including 2-12 in Pac-12 play. During his tenure, Bone’s teams have gone 66-63 as an encore to former head coach Tony Bennett’s three seasons (2006-09), when WSU went 69-33 and made two NCAA Tournament appearances.
The Cougars delivered one of their rare wins this season Feb. 1, defeating Washington 72-67. WSU trailed 42-34 with 13:40 to play following 3-pointers by Nigel Williams-Goss and C.J. Wilcox, but forced the Huskies to miss 13 of their next 14 shots.
“It’s always a battle against Washington,” said Bone, a former Lorenzo Romar assistant. “The Huskies are coming off a win (86-62 at Oregon State) and I think we’ll be seeing them at their best this season. We definitely need a win, no doubt about that.”
Washington State hasn’t been able to generate much offense this season. The Cougars rank 12th in the conference in scoring offense (62.3 points per game), 12th in field goal percentage (40.6), 12th in free throw shooting (64.8) and 10th in 3-point shooting (33.7).
“We need more guys to score,” said Bone. “That’s been them theme all year long. We haven’t had enough guys scoring.”
Junior DaVonte Lacy has been in double figures in all but two games this season and twice has gone for more than 30 — 34 at Colorado Feb. 5 and 39 against California Feb. 12. But while Lacy is averaging 19.3, only one other Cougar is in double digits, D.J. Shelton at 10.0.
As bad, the Cougars, 0-9 in conference road games, are the worst in the conference at defending the 3-ball (37.6), a stat that makes Wilcox take notice. He’s made more 3-pointers (79) than any player in the conference.
“C.J. is just such a prolific player,” said Bone. “He lit us up (24 points) the first time we played them and we really guarded him.”
With 13 losses, the Huskies have pretty much killed their chances of an at-large invitation to the NCAA Tournament, but a sweep of their final three at home and a good showing in the Pac-12 Tournament could get them an invite to the NIT.
SERIES: Dates to Feb. 16, 1910 when Washington won 13-9 in Pullman. The Huskies have won three of their last four against the Cougars, but dropped the last one, 72-67, in Pullman Feb. 1. UW held the halftime lead after shooting 52 percent, but made only 38 percent in the second half. C.J. Wilcox led the Huskies with 24 points and D.J. Shelton led WSU with 20.
