Forward Cam Weaver, among the best local homegrown players in Washington’s youth soccer history, from Kentwood High School to Skagit Valley College to Seattle University, has signed with the Seattle Sounders. Weaver, 30, played in four preseason matches with one start and has continued training with the team.
“We are happy to bring Cam back home and love what he brings us in terms of experience and success in MLS,” said Sporting Director Chris Henderson. “He is dangerous in front of goal and competes for every ball. His character fits very well in our group.”
Weaver’s first MLS year was in 2009 with the San Jose Earthquakes, then played four-plus years with Houston, reaching the the 2011 and 2012 MLS Cup final with the Dynamo. He has 90 MLS appearances with 13 goals and five assists.
Weaver, 6-foot-4 and 195 pounds, in 2004 helped lead Seattle U. to an unbeaten season and Division II national championship. He was recently inducted into the school’s hall of fame. He began his pro career in 2006 with the Sounders in USL-1. His 18 goals tied for the league lead, and was named rookie of the year.
He played two years in Norway for FK Haugesund, scoring 21 goals in 51 games and reaching the Norwegian Cup final.
The Sounders FC roster now includes six players born in Washington state, including Marcus Hahnemann, DeAndre Yedlin, Aaron Kovar , all of Seattle, and two from Federal Way, Lamar Neagle and Sean Okoli.
