Without a natural position and still overweight, first baseman Jesus Montero, a former top prospect, was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma Friday, the Mariners said. The club also optioned to Tacoma outfielders Xavier Avery and James Jones and re-assigned to minor-league camp infielder Chris Taylor.
Remaining in the major league camp are 40 players (29 roster, 11 non-roster invitees) with the season opener against the Angels 17 days away. Here’s a rundown of those aiming to make the 25-man roster.

The guy is an embarrassment
I was curious what he did this spring beyond being overweight. checked the SM site and he batted .310 with a .976 OPS. It just seems easier the dump on the guy since he came in to spring apparently a little depressed about last years demotion. The truth is he is hitting but needs a position.
He isn’t a 1B. If he can’t be a catcher the only position for him is DH. With Morales gone there’s an opportunity for him there. He needs to lose weight and continue hitting well.
