The heavy rain in New York came as predicted Wednesday and postponed the Mariners game at Yankee Stadium.  The teams won’t play a doubleheader Thursday, the final of a three-game series, but will make up the game on June 2, an off-day for both. The Mariners play a two-game series in Atlanta starting June 3.

The Mariners scheduled Wednesday starter, rookie lefty Roenis Elias, will get the start Thursday. The Yankees had planned to open with a reliever, David Phelps, because of the 10-game suspension of Michael Pineda. Instead they will start Hiroki Kuroda, who was set to go Thursday.

The rainout was the first for the Mariners in New York since June 7, 2003, when they were booked to play the Mets, and first rainout involving the Yanks since May 18, 1988.

The Mariners already had one postponement, April 4 at Oakland, due to unsafe field conditions. That game was re-scheduled to be part of a doubleheader May 7, the last game of the current, 10-game, nine day trip.
