Richard Sherman has his new deal, and it’s magnum — $57.4 million over four years with $40 million guaranteed. With an average annual value of more than $14 million, he becomes the highest paid defensive back in NFL history. Sherman, who was scheduled to have a press conference at 11 a.m. Tuesday, announced the deal and terms on a post to his blog, which follows:
I am blessed to announce that the Seattle Seahawks and I have reached an agreement on a contract extension. The goal has always been to stay in Seattle and continue to play for the Seahawks. With this chapter closed, I can continue to focus on what is important – defending our Super Bowl Championship and being the best cornerback in the NFL.
This is a great moment for my family, foundations and the people who supported me to this point. Hard work and execution got me to this moment, the Seattle Seahawks have backed up that respect with this contract. The terms of my deal are 4 years for a total of $57.4M with $40M guaranteed. There is no other city or team that I would want to play football for.
Greatness is realized from countless hours of work, studying, practice, sacrifice and courage. This is just the beginning and I will continue to set the bar higher and higher on and off the field.
Much appreciation to the Seattle Seahawks franchise, the coaches, teammates, friends, the fans, my family and the 12s. The support does not go unnoticed and I carry that into each snap. From Compton to Stanford, 5th round draft pick to winning the Super Bowl – dare to be great.

Sherm has rung the brass bell but this really makes me wonder about John and Pete, tying up so much cap in 1 player that is NOT a QB.
Revis makes $12m – why not sign Sherm to $12.1?
Paying him $3m over Revis makes little sense.
If this is what Sherm needed, then I’d say for the sake of the rest of the team, trade him for a few #1’s and develop other cb’s. Sherm is great, but everyone is replaceable.
The thing is, I think we can trust Carroll and Schneider to make the right decisions. Their success pretty much speaks for itself. If you want to second-guess someone, start with guys who run the baseball team next door.
We all know the M’s are a disaster, so I won’t address those goofballs.
As to Sherm, how can anyone argue with the Hawks’ success under John and Pete? My concern is they got absolutely nothing from Sherman for staying on a SB winning team – they paid him 20% PLUS over the next highest paid CB – that simply doesn’t make any sense.
I am fine with Thomas @ $10m, but this is so far out of whack it has to make you wonder.
No CB is worth $15m – we’ll have to see how this plays out.
Geeez – sign up 2 @ $8 apiece, trade Sherm for picks and happy days!
Move Thomas to CB, trade Sherm and sign up another, top safety @ $7.
There are a lot of scenarios other than a $15m lay-down. This sounds like an M’s deal.
I’m just concerned they will run out of cap and will be left with a shell.
Trade Sherman for a few 1’s, hmm, what team has the desire to give them up? One 1, no way a few. He’s a great player who can be replace but not duplicated.
If the cap becomes a problem trade him and play a lesser player. The price of elite players is just coming up while Sherman’s price is fixed for 4 years.
Crabtree is a good receiver and ever dog will have his day.
He’s the best corner in the game. Let’s see that sorry WR in Crabtree get a result like this! He should never open his mouth about the best! Sherm just shut it real good!!!
