The Mariners Wednesday recalled RHP Brandon Maurer from AAA Tacoma and optioned RHP Erasmo Ramirez to the Rainiers. Maurer was in uniform for Wednesday night’s series finale against the Boston Red Sox (7:10 p.m.) at Safeco Field.
The 23-year-old Maurer went 1-0 with three saves and a 2.79 ERA (6 ER, 19.1 IP) with 24 strikeouts in 12 games, including one start. This will mark his second stint with Seattle this season. He went 1-4 with a 7.52 ERA (27 ER, 32.1 IP) with 17 strikeouts in seven starts (April 20-May 30) before being optioned to the Rainiers.
Ramirez, 24, has posted a 1-4 record with a 4.58 ERA (27 ER, 53.0 IP) with 42 strikeouts in 11 starts over three stints with Seattle this season. Over his last four starts, Ramirez had a 0.90 ERA (2 ER, 20.0 IP) with 14 strikeouts, lowering his ERA from 6.82 to 4.58. In his previous stint with AAA Tacoma, he was 1-3 with a 4.55 ERA (15 ER, 29.2 IP) with 22 strikeouts. He also made one start with High-A High Desert.
Ramirez pitched four innings in Seattle’s 8-2 win over the Red Sox Tuesday, leaving after throwing 93 pitches. In five starts since June 3, Ramirez has allowed only seven earned runs, but walked 29 batters.

Okay, so Ramirez has a 0.90 ERA in his last four starts (too many walks, but I thought keeping the other team from SCORING was a little more important than letting them on base) and gets sent down so they could bring up Maurer, who was bombed worse than Dresden the last time he was up? Wastes an option, too.
All I can figure is that Ramirez was sent down with the idea of bringing Walker up to fill his berth in the rotation and since they’ve been bringing Maurer out of the bullpen in Tacoma, he’ll be brought up to relieve while one of the current relievers will be sent down or placed on the DL when they call up Walker. Otherwise, this move doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. Pitching really hasn’t been a problem this season.
Maybe it’s temporary but I agree it doesn’t make sense. Probably more happening than we know.
