Felix Hernandez, who went 3-1 with a 1.22 ERA in six starts while striking out 54 batters, was named the American League Pitcher of the Month for June, the fourth time in Hernandez’s career that he has been so honored. No other Mariners pitcher won more than two such awards.
Hernandez’s 1.22 ERA is 10th-lowest in a month in club history (minimum five starts), and the fourth-lowest of his career (0.82, August 2010; 0.94, June 2009; 1.08, August 2012). Hernandez’s 54 strikeouts are most in a month during his career, topping 51 done three times (June 2010, August 2010, August 2011).
Hernandez previously won monthly awards in June 2009, September 2009 and August 2012. Mark Langston (August 1987, September 1988) and Randy Johnson (June 1990, June 1997) received monthly honors twice each.
Edgar Martinez, who retired following the 2004 season after 18 years with the club, won five Player of the Month Awards.
Hernandez is 10-2 with a 2.10 ERA and has 137 strikeouts in his 18 starts. He is scheduled to make his next start Saturday against the Chicago White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field.

If the bullpen doesn’t implode the King has another Cy Young award awaiting him. I used to wonder if the club would ever get a player of the Big Unit’s caliber ever again. Not anymore.
