The Sounders Thursday traded midfielder/forward David Estrada to D.C. United in exchange for a third-round pick in the 2017 MLS SuperDraft. The club selected Estrada with the 11th overall pick in the 2010 MLS SuperDraft. He started 18 of 41 appearances in five seasons, scoring five goals.
“David has been a fantastic member of our organization, both on and off the field, for the past five years,” said owner and General Manager Adrian Hanauer. “He has made great contributions to the team’s performance and has been very involved in the community. We wish David the very best at D.C. United.”
Estrada made one appearance this season, logging five minutes in a 1-0 win at D.C. United June 28. He also played 90 minutes and had an assist in a 5-0 win over PSA Elite in the U.S. Open Cup June 18, and started three MLS Reserve League matches.
The Sounders twice loaned Estrada this season, to the Charlotte Eagles (USL-Pro) and to the Atlanta Silverbacks (NASL).
Estrada had his most significant stretch as a Sounder at the start of the 2012 season when he scored the third hat trick in franchise history March 17 against Toronto, the first goals of his career. In the next match, Estrada notched the game-winning goal in a 2-0 win over Houston. His efforts earned him MLS Player of the Week honors.
The Sounders host the Houston Dynamo at 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

Good young player; the Sounders just never could find room for him. It happens.
I thought in 2012 he’d get more playing time but it didn’t happen. Hope he gets to play more in DC.
