The Mariners Friday handed out awards to the best of their minor league players, naming INF D.J. Peterson and OF/1B Jordy Lara as co-Players of the Year. Peterson, Seattle’s first-round pick in 2013 out of the University of New Mexico, hit .297 with 31 home runs and 111 RBIs split between A High Desert and AA Jackson. A native of the Dominican Republic, Lara hit .337 with 26 homers and 104 RBIs, also split between High Desert and Jackson.
The Mariners selected OF/1B Patrick Kivlehan, a 2012 fourth-round pick from Rutgers University, as the system’s Unsung Hero. Kivlehan hit .295, scored 84 runs, had 32 doubles and 103 RBIs in 138 games combined between High Desert and Jackson.
Ketel Marte, signed by the club in 2010 out of the Dominican Republic, won the Heart & Soul award. He hit .304, scored 79 runs and stole 29 bases for Jackson and the AAA Tacoma Rainiers. In 19 games with Tacoma, he hit safely in 16.
RHP Jordan Pries, a 30th-round pick in 2011, and RHP Edwin Diaz, a third-round pick in 2012, were named co-Pitchers of the Year.
Pries split the year between Jackson and Tacoma, finishing 10-8 with a 3.36 ERA in 27 games. Diaz went 6-8 with a 3.33 ERA in 24 starts for Clinton of the Midwest League.
The Mariners also named Matt Brazis, a 28th-round pick in 2012 out of Boston College, as the Relief Pitcher of the Year. He went 4-1 with six saves and a 2.37 ERA in 40 relief appearances with High Desert and Jackson.
All of the minor league honorees will be at Safeco Field Saturday night for a pre-game, on-field introduction in advance of the second of three season-ending games between the Mariners and Angels.
