Mariners pitcher Chris Young was named the American League Comeback Player of the Year Friday. Unlike The Sporting News and Players Choice awards that Young previously won, this is sanctioned by Major League Baseball and presented annually to one player in each league who has re-emerged on the field.
The 30 club beat reporters from MLB.com, the official web site of Major League Baseball, selected the winners from a list of 30 candidates (one per club).
Young, 35, returned to the majors for the first time since 2012 to go 12-9 with a 3.65 ERA (67 earned runs, 165 innings) in 30 games/29 starts with the Mariners. The 6-foot-10 right-hander did not pitch in the majors in 2013 after undergoing surgery on his right shoulder. From 2009-2012, Young made 42 starts while battling various shoulder injuries.
Young was named The Sporting News winner Oct. 20 and the Players Choice Nov. 3.
Felix Hernandez is one of three finalists for the AL Cy Young Award, which will be released Wednesday. Hernandez has already been voted the league’s top pitcher by The Sporting News, and last week won a Players Choice Award for the top pitcher at his position.
