Robinson Cano will be OK, so Mariners fans can stand down. The All-Star second baseman left an exhibition game in Tokyo early Saturday morning after a pitch struck his foot.  X-rays disclosed a non-displaced fracture of his right small toe.

The Mariners released a medical update that  said that the injury “will not require a cast or any treatment, just rest.”

Cano, who is with a team of MLB players in a series in Tokyo, was hit by Japanese pitcher Yuki Nishi on the second pitch of his at-bat in the seventh inning.

Trainer Rick Griffin spoke by phone with Cano phone, who said there was no pain. He is expected to resume baseball activities in mid-December and be ready for spring training in mid-February. But Cano is done with the five-game series against Japanese all-stars, who lead the series 3-0.

  1. He should be fine by spring training. Emphasis on the word “should.” If he has problems with it during the season this will be remembered.
