The Mariners Thursday night made three more roster moves, adding RHP Mayckol Guaipe, C John Hicks and INF Ketel Marte to their 40-man roster. With the moves, the Mariners have 39 players on the 40-man roster. Earlier Thursday, the team claimed LHP Edgar Olmos off waivers from the Miami Marlins.
Guaipe, 24, spent 2014 with AA Jackson, making 40 relief appearances. He posted a 1-3 record with 12 saves and a 2.89 ERA (18 ER, 56 IP), and averaged nine strikeouts per nine innings (56 strikeouts). Guaipe also recorded the lowest WHIP (0.964) among Mariners’ full-season minor leaguers.
The native of Barcelona, Venezuela, was signed by the Mariners as a non-drafted international free agent Oct. 11, 2006.
Hicks, 25, split 2014 between AA Jackson and AAA Tacoma, batting .290 (84×290) with 12 doubles, three triples, five home runs and 47 RBIs in 81 games. He has thrown out nearly 50 percent of attempted base stealers during four minor league seasons (137 CS, 151 SB), including 38.2 (26 CCS, 42 SB) in 2014.
Following the regular season, Hicks appeared in 13 games with the Surprise Saguaros in the Arizona Fall League and hit .304 (14×46) with four doubles, two home runs and 11 RBIs.
A native of Richmond, VA., Hicks was selected by the Mariners in the fourth round of the 2011 draft out of the University of Virginia.
Marte, 21, hit .304 (159×523) with 79 runs scored, 32 doubles, six triples, four home runs and 55 RBIs in 128 games with AA Jackson and AAA Tacoma. Among Mariners minor leaguers, the switch hitter ranked third in batting average and hits, and fourth in stolen bases (29).
He was named a Southern League All-Star batting .302 (134×443) in 109 games with Jackson before being promoted to Tacoma Aug. 10. In 19 games as one of the youngest players in the Pacific Coast League, he batted .313 (25×80) with five doubles, two home runs and 9 RBIs.
The native of Nizao, Dominican Republic was signed by the Mariners as a non-drafted international free agent Aug. 13, 2010.
In an unrelated move, the Mariners Thursday acquired right-handed pitcher Sam Gaviglio from the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for minor league infielder Ty Kelly. The 40-man roster was unaffected by Gaviglio’s acquisition.
Gaviglio, 24, went 5-12 with a 4.28 ERA in 25 games, including 24 starts, in a career-high 136.2 innings with AA Springfield in the Cardinals organization last season. He posted a 2.90 ERA (20 ER, 62.0 IP) in 11 games, including 10 starts, during the second half of the season after posting a 5.42 ERA (45 ER, 74.2 IP) in 14 starts during the first half.
