In the aftermath of their embarrassing 62-57 loss to Stony Brook (Long Island, NY., American East) at Alaska Airlines Arena Sunday night, the Washington Huskies took a predictable tumble in both wire-service polls Monday, falling to 21st in the latest Associated Press rankings and to 19th in the USA Today/Coaches poll. The Huskies were ranked 13th in both prior to the upset.
Washington’s RPI ranking also absorbed a major hit. Before losing to Stony Brook, the Huskies were ranked No. 22 nationally. Now they are 34th.
The latest Associated Press rankings also include, from the Pac-12 Conference, No. 8 Arizona and No. 10 Utah. The USA Today/Coaches poll includes No. 7 Arizona and No. 12 Utah.
The Huskies entered the Stony Brook game with 11 consecutive wins and had a chance to set a record for the best start under coach Lorenzo Romar. But Washington, which at one point held a 16-point lead over the Seawolves, fell victim to a 17-2 Stony Brook run in the second half and couldn’t recover.
“I need to do a better job of getting them prepared,” Romar said after the loss.
The Huskies (11-1) begin Pac-12 play Friday at 7 p.m. against California in Berkeley and will follow with a 7 p.m. Sunday contest at Stanford in Palo Alto.
