Kam Chancellor played the Super Bowl Sunday with a torn medial collateral ligament in his left knee, along with a bone bruise, the Seahawks strong safety told the team’s website, seahawks.com, Wedneaday. News that he was injured in practice Friday was released by a pool report, but the extent was not known.
“My injury happened two days before the game and they told me I wasn’t going to be able to play,” Chancellor said of his conversation with team doctors. “They told me, ‘Torn MCL and bone bruise.’ I was mad. I was frustrated. But at the end of the day, I was able to play.”
Playing with a brace, Chancellor made 10 tackles, but it was apparent on several plays he lacked his usual closing speed. The Patriots scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns and QB Tom Brady completed 13 of 15 passes in the period to win 28-24.
The story did not say what the prognosis was, but such tears usually require surgery.
“It’s not a matter of talking about being injured and playing, it’s about being grateful for getting the opportunity to still even play through the injury,” he said. “There are some people that get injured and can’t even play a game. So you’ve got to be grateful for how you’re feeling at the moment.”
If he has surgery, he will join at least two other Legion of Boom members, CB Richard Sherman (elbow) and CB Jeremy Lane (broken arm) who are booked for off-season repairs. A fourth, FS Earl Thomas, may have surgery for a torn shoulder labrum.

I know all the talk is about the doomed pass from Wilson at the goal line, but the reason Seattle lost is because, for the first time in recent memory, the defense couldn’t hold a 10-point lead in the 4th quarter. As soon as Avril went out with the concussion, they stopped pressuring Brady, and Brady, like any good quarterback, took full advantage. It kills me because when we went up by 10, I was already thinking about a three-peat. Had they been at full strength, 24 points would have been enough. That said, the offense could have also rendered this conversation moot by running some time off the clock or — gasp! — actually continuing to score after it went up by 10. Instead, it went three and out for most of the 4th quarter. There’s something about Wilson/Bevell/Carroll that prevents this offense from fully taking command of a game. The offense is only productive when the game is on the line, and the team can only win when its defense dominates.
Injuries are part of the game. That being said, the LOB did not play at their usual standards. The fact that four of them could be facing surgery this month shows it. The goal this offseason will not be to replace any starters but rather to shore up depth.
These guys are the greatest. Sorry about the mental injury, too. The pass was a suspect call.Still, it looks like Butler blasted Lockette to the ground before the pass got to Lockette. Pass interference?
That’s what I thought as well, but the league would probably say he was going for the ball and the defender has a right to the ball. Were this a basketball game though he’d be call for a personal foul.
