Midfielder Osvaldo Alonso, 29, had successful right groin surgery Friday in Santa Monica, CA., the Sounders said Saturday.  Alonso, who has yet to train because of the injury, is set to begin rehabilitation immediately. No timetable was given for his return. The designated player from Cuba was the club’s most valuable player from 2010-13.

Alonso has 168 starts in 172 games since 2009, with six goals and 14 assists. He started every match in the past season.

The Sounders return to Starfire Sports in Tukwila Monday after a nine-day training camp in Southern California. The Sounders lost a 2-1 friendly against the Los Angeles Galaxy behind closed doors Friday afternoon. Marco Pappa scored Seattle’s goal.

After a week at Starfire, they head to Tucson for a training stint Feb. 15-March 1. The season begins at 6:30 p.m. March 8 at the Clink against defending Eastern Conference champion New England  (Fox Sports 1).
