Richard Sherman will not need elbow surgery, according to a report Monday by Fox Sports 1’s Jimmy Garafolo, citing unnamed sources. He tweeted that Sherman’s progress since the injury was sufficient to hold off the operation. Sherman was injured in a collision with teammate Kam Chancellor in the fourth quarter of the NFC Championship game.

After the Super Bowl, Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said Sherman appeared to be destined for Tommy John ligament replacement surgery. Later on, Carroll said he “may have been misled” about the kind of surgery and backed off his original statement.

Sherman was one of four members of the Legion of Boom who were scheduled for surgery, including Earl Thomas (torn shoulder labrum), Kam Chancellor (torn left knee MCL) and CB Jeremy Lane (broken left arm).

All but Lane finished the game, but the Seahawks, after giving up 13 points total in the fourth quarter of the previous eight games, gave up 14 to New England in the 28-24 loss.

Sherman’s girlfriend Ashley gave birth Thursday to a baby boy, Rayden, Feb. 5, a coincidence not lost his dad, who wears No. 25.

“My son sure does know how to make an entrance! 2/5/15  . . . Is it a coincidence or is he just that clever?! Either way I’m ecstatic,” Sherman said Thursday on Twitter. “Haven’t felt anything better than this!”

The possibility of the baby’s birth on Super Bowl Sunday, and Sherman’s potential absence because of it, became a national story during the run-up to the game.

Ex-Huskies WR Smith invited back

Kevin Smith, who played four years for the University of Washington and had a tryout with the Seahawks a year ago, was one of seven free agent players who were signed by the Seahawks Monday.

The list includes QB R.J. Archer of William & Mary, OG C.J. Davis of Pittsburgh, LS Luke Ingram of Hawaii, LB Brendan Kelly of Wisconsin, DE Will Pericak of Colorado and C Jared Wheeler of Miami.

As a UW senior in 2013, Smith, of Compton, CA., caught 50 passes for 765 yards and four touchdowns.

  1. Good to hear about Sherman not needing surgery. Hope it’s an accurate one though, Biggest concern would be that they find out in July he needs surgery after all.
