Washington sophomore point guard Nigel Williams-Goss became the first academic All-America in the program’s history Thursday when he was named to the third team. The group was selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Williams-Goss has a 3.74 cumulative GPA in pre-social science and plans to double major in communications and psychology. The Happy Valley, OR., native joins Stanford guard Chasson Randle as the only Pac-12 players selected. Randle, a fifth-year senior for the Cardinal, was named to the first team.
A finalist for the Bob Cousy Award, given to the nation’s top point guard, Williams-Goss is averaging 15.6 points and 4.6 rebounds for a 15-12 UW team that’s 11th in the conference. He also leads the the Pac-12 in assists, with 6.1 per game, and minutes, with 36.7 per game. He is two assists away from the Huskies’ career top 10 list.

Another feather in Nigel’s cap. Well done, young man. He’s becoming the lone bright spot in a season that went south after the Stony Brook game. I was a little surprised that he’s the first UW basketball player to be an Academic All-American, but I shouldn’t be conflating a school’s academic reputation with its athletic program when they have nothing to do with each other.
