Chad Marshall was suspended for Sunday’s home game against Portland and fined an undisclosed amount by MLS for a serious foul that endangered the safety of an opponent in the 13thminute of Seattle’s match against Colorado Rapids Saturday.

Marshall slid cleats-first and tagged Rapids forward Vicente Sanchez in the shin, sending the Colorado star tumbling. Marshall, who appeared to be making a play on the ball, received a yellow card in what became a 3-1 Seattle victory.

Marshall will return May 3 for a road match against New York City FC. Marshall has started five of Seattle’s six games this season after winning 2014 MLS Defender of the Year in his first season with Seattle.

Sunday’s nationally televised game on FOX Sports 1 begins at 6:30 p.m., 5½ hours after the Mariners host Minnesota next door at Safeco.

  1. Rules of the game I suppose. One point of interest is that Marshall already has 2 yellow cards this season when he had only one all of last season. Possibly with the Defender of the Year award comes a greater attention by referees.
