The University of Washington’s men’s basketball program suffered another significant defection Monday when fifth-year forward Jernard Jarreau asked for and received his scholarship release. But the Huskies were buoyed by the signing Renton native Dominic Green, a 6-foot-6 small forward ranked 77th nationally by scout.com, who will join Lorenzo Romar’s program in the fall.
Jarreau is the fourth defection since the end of the 2014-15 season, joining guard (and leading scorer) Nigel Williams-Goss, center Gilles Dierickx and forward Darin Johnson. With Jarreau’s loss, the Huskies will return three scholarship players.
A New Orleans native, Jarreau sat out the 2013-14 season with a knee injury, but returned last year and made 21 starts. He averaged 5.1 points and 4.7 rebounds. Jarreau has not announced his next destination, but it is expected to be to a school where he can play immediately.
Green, Hazen High School’s all-time leading scorer, will join the program in the fall instead of his original commitment to Arizona State. Green is the fifth Top 100 player to join Washington’s class of 2015, most of any school in the nation.
“We are very excited to bring Dominic into our Husky program,” Romar said. “He is an outstanding shooter with a nose for scoring. He has tremendous length and can play and guard several different positions, which is consistent with what we like for our program in terms of versatility.”
Green is the seventh member of UW’s 2015 class and the fourth to hail from the Seattle area. He will join Dejounte Murray (No. 39), Marquese Chriss (No. 49), Matisse Thybulle (No. 76), David Crisp (No. 99), Malik Dime and Devenir Duruisseau in the class. Green and Crisp played extensively on the AAU circuit together.
Green was released from his commitment to ASU when the school fired Herb Sendek and replaced him with Bobby Hurley.
The Huskies now have the top player in the state with the No. 1 and No. 2-ranked small forwards from the state all joining the program.
Green broke the Hazen record set by former UW standout and current Huskies radio analyst Jason Hamilton, whose record stood for more than two decades.
Green averaged 22.6 points as a senior captain and led the Highlanders to a second-place 11-3 record in the Seamount League and a 16-7 mark overall. He was named the Seamount Player of the Year as a junior and senior.

What a coup for Coach Romar! A highly ranked recruit who’s from Washington. As long as this crop sticks around, unlike what Quincy Pondexter’s highly regarded class did, I can see the program really taking off now. Too bad Nigel didn’t stick around.
