Takeaway

The afterglow from Hisashi Iwakuma’s no-hitter last Wednesday sure faded fast. The going-nowhere Boston Red Sox, last in the AL East (51-64), pounced on Seattle starter Mike Montgomery for three runs in the first and six in the third inning and slaughtered the Mariners 15-1 Friday night at Fenway Park (box score). Seattle (54-62) set season highs for number of runs and hits (21) surrendered.

Essential moment

After Seattle took a 1-0 lead on a Kyle Seager home run in the first, the Red Sox jumped ahead 3-1 on an RBI double by David Ortiz and a two-run homer by Rusney Castillo.

Boston poured it on in the third with a two-run double by Pablo Sandoval and a two-run homer by Travis Shaw. Boston sent 10 men to the plate in that inning in taking a 7-1 lead.

Hitters

Seager’s home run, to right center in the first, was his 17th. Austin Jackson had the only multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles. Nelson Cruz (0-for-3, one walk), returning from a bout with neck spasms, saw his 21-game hitting streak end (longest for a Seattle batter since Ichiro’s 27-gamer in 2009), but extended his streak of consecutive games reaching base to 25 with a walk.

Pitchers

Montgomery (4-5, 4.14) endured the worst outing of his career, allowing nine runs, all earned, on 10 hits in 2.1 innings. Montgomery’s ERA jumped from 3.25 to 4.14 . . .  None of the three Seattle relievers did anything laudable: David Rollins allowed two earned runs in 2.2 innings,  Mayckol Guaipe three in 1.2 and Rob Rasmuseen one in 1.1

Words

Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon declined to speak with the media following the rout.

Noteworthy

Red Sox manager John Farrell said Friday that he has been diagnosed with stage 1 lymphoma and will sit out the rest of the season while he undergoes treatment. Bench coach Tony Lovullo took over as interim manager prior to the game.

Next

The second game of the three-game set is Saturday at 10:35 a.m., PT. Felix Hernandez (14-6, 3.11) will oppose LHP Wade Miley (8-9, 4.68). Following the series, the Mariners travel to Texas to face the Rangers for three games.

  1. With the horrible news about Farell, the Sox were extremely motivated and emotional for this game. Hope he makes a full recovery.

  2. First time in 110 years that a team followed a no-hitter by giving up 15 runs. Too bad Vegas didn’t offer that as a side bet in the spring. Somebody would have had a flash of intuition and plunked down $5 on your Seattle Mariners.

  3. The so-called “King Felix” got his washed up ass thoroughly kicked AGAIN….. that guy is such a joke. This team is a discrace. Glad I was smart enough to cease watching this garbage in June. So now this clown has an ERA hovering near 4. How in the blue monkey hell do you give up TEN STINKING RUNS?! Can’t trade Princess Felix. What a joke that guy is.
