Offensive lineman Dexter Charles has retired from University of Washington football due to a lingering knee injury, coach Chris Petersen said Monday. Charles, a Stanwood High/Camano Island, WA., product who started 30 games over the past three seasons, mostly at left guard, was entering his fifth year.
The loss of Charles further weakens a Washington offense that will play this year without receiver/kick returner John Ross and has yet to establish a starting quarterback as it gears up for its season opener at Boise State.
“We’re all very disappointed that Dexter’s injury won’t allow him to continue to play,” Petersen said. “I’m grateful for his dedication and hard work and very pleased that he earned his degree (anthropology). He’s interested in the coaching profession and I wish him nothing but the best.”
Charles played in all 14 of Washington’s games last year, starting 10. He served as team captain in Washington’s Apple Cup win over Washington State. Following the season, he was named honorable mention All-Pac-12.
The Huskies open at Boise State, where Petersen coached for eight years, Sept. 4. Pac-12 media two weeks ago picked Washington to finish fourth in the Northern Division.

With Miles, Charles and Ross gone and the losses on defense looking like a bowl game is going to be next to impossible. Hope they make it but losing Charles is like the proverbial nail in the coffin.
This is tough news for the Dawgs and for Charles. The only positive is that there won’t be any false high expectations this time around. I hope Charles has a bright future.
