The Mariners Monday recalled LHP Edgar Olmos from AAA Tacoma and optioned LHP Rob Rasmussen back to the Pacific Coast League Rainiers. The 25-year-old Olmos, 1-1 with a 3.55 ERA with one save in 20 games, was to have joined the club in time for Monday night’s first of a three-game series with the Texas Rangers in Arlington.
On the disabled list from April 3-May 3 with a left shoulder impingement, Olmos is coming off five hitless innings against Sacramento. In 33 innings this season as both a starter and reliever, he has struck out 34 while walking 13. In his last 10 games (July 10-current), he went 0-1 with a 1.86 ERA.
Olmos, who missed all of spring training with the injury, was acquired by Seattle from the Miami Marlins via a waiver claim Nov. 20. He made his MLB debut with the Marlins June 3, 2013 at Philadelphia, allowing one hit in 1.1 scoreless innings in relief. Olmos was selected by the Marlins in the third round of the 2008 amateur draft out of Birmingham High School in Los Angeles.
Rasmussen, 26, went 2-1, 16.20 in eight games with the Mariners and was the winning pitcher in Sunday’s 10-8, 12-inning victory at Boston, working a shutout inning. He appeared in all three games in the Red Sox series.
In nine games, Rasmussen has five shutout appearances but has allowed 12 earned runs in the other four games.
Rasmussen came to Seattle from Toronto (along with RHP Jose Ramirez) in exchange for RHP Mark Lowe July 31.
