Game recap: Rangers 7, Mariners 2

Takeaway

The Mariners concluded one of the most statistically perverse road trips in franchise history Wednesday. During it, they set a club record by allowing 45 runs in three games in Boston, lost on a walk-off walk (Monday) for the first time in eight years, and ended the six-game sojourn by watching reliever Joe Beimel join the lightly lamented Doug Jarvis in an expansive pantheon of single-game franchise goats. Beimel punched his ticket in by allowing back-to-back-to-back home runs  — on just four pitches — in the seventh, turning a 3-2 Rangers lead into a 7-2 rout (box).

Essential Moment

Until the trifecta by Mitch Moreland (two-run jolt), Mike Napoli and Elvis Andrus, the Mariners were in the game despite falling behind 3-0 in the first. They cut the deficit to 3-1 on a Mark Trumbo homer in the fifth and to 3-2 on a ground ball out by Franklin Gutierrez in the sixth. The Mariners, though, couldn’t take advantage of run-scoring opportunities in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. In the sixth, they had the bases loaded with one out and only pushed across one run. In the seventh, the Rangers threw Jesus Montero out at the plate following a Ketel Marte single. But the trio of Texas bombs rendered all of that meaningless.

Hitters

The Mariners, who finished with nine, received multi-hit games from Robinson Cano and Montero. Cano is hitting .272 and Montero .254 following his double, Seattle’s only extra-base hit and its 119th since the All-Star break (most in the majors) . . . Trumbo’s home run was his sixth of the season and lifted his average to .240 . . . Nelson Cruz, who went 1-for-4, extended his streak of consecutive games reaching base to a career-high 30 with a single to left in the sixth.

Pitchers

Before Beimel gave up three consecutive long balls to Moreland, Napoli and Andrus, the last Seattle pitcher to do that was Jarvis, also at Texas, where Lance Nix, Rod Barajas and Adrian Gonzalez all went deep April 25, 2004 in the sixth inning. The Mariners designated Jarvis for assignment almost immediately . . . After a rough first inning in which he allowed three earned runs, Seattle starter Mike Montgomery settled down to pitch five scoreless innings. Montgomery, who allowed nine earned runs in his previous start at Boston, permitted six hits and struck out three, but walked four and came away with his sixth loss against four wins.

Words

After watching 1,130 feet worth of home runs from Moreland, Napoli and Andrus in the seventh, manager Lloyd McClendon declined to speak for public consumption.

Noteworthy

The Mariners fell to 56-65 and to 2-4 on the six-game trip . . . The Mariners are 13-18-8 in series played, 30-32 on the road and 24-24 vs. the AL West . . . The Mariners expect that James Paxton, on the disabled list since May 29 with a strained middle finger on his pitching hand, will begin a rehab assignment with AAA Tacoma Sunday. McClendon said Wednesday that Paxton will need “several” outings with the Rainiers before he can return to the Mariners . . . Friday’s home game between the Mariners and Chicago White Sox will be broadcast on 770 KTTH and 570 KVI radio instead of 710 ESPN due to a conflict with the Seahawks-Chiefs game. The contest features two of the American League’s best pitchers, Felix Hernandez facing Chris Sale.

Next

The Mariners, off Thursday, begin a three-game series with the White Sox Friday at Safeco Field (first pitch 7:10 p.m., PT). Felix Hernandez (1407, 3.65), roughed up in his last start, will face Chris Sale (11-7, 3.32), the American League strikeout leader (208).
