Evan Mathis, who interviewed with the Seahawks Saturday, accepted Tuesday a one-year deal from the Denver Broncos to help protect QB Peyton Manning. The contract for the two-time Pro Bowl guard was reported to be about $4 million with incentives, too much for the salary-cap strapped Seahawks.

The Seahawks have about $5 million left under the cap, most of which needs to be preserved for in-season contingencies such as injury replacements. Mathis, 33, was cut in June by Philadelphia in a contract dispute. He would have made $5.1 million in the final year of his Eagles deal.

In Seattle, he likely would have taken the left guard spot of James Carpenter, who was lost in free agency. The current replacement is Justin Britt, who started as a rookie last season at right tackle, but has not played guard since his freshman year at Missouri.

Coach Pete Carroll indicated Monday that he didn’t see a great chance at signing Mathis.

“He would obviously bring us experience, but there’s a lot of issues here that we have to take care of to get that in order,” he said. “We got the information that we needed.”

The Seahawks might have been able to accommodate Mathis if they cut a player or restructured a contract or two. They obviously didn’t think the trouble was worth it, and/or figured Britt showed enough in his first start at guard Friday in Kansas City to hold the spot for the season.

That doesn’t mean the Seahawks have stopped looking, but it does mean the best available player for the guard spot is off the table. They were to have had a visit from Samson Satele, 30, who started 16 games at center for the Dolphins last season. Line coach Tom Cable worked with Satele in Oakland when Cable was head coach in 2009 and 2010.

  1. Disappointing and very telling about Mathis. It’s all about the money apparently and I was hoping maybe at this point in his career at age 33 it wouldn’t be. I had hopes he might take a minimum salary on a one year deal so he could get a Super Bowl ring but evidently that difference in salary was too much and he feels he at the very least has as good a chance with the Broncos, if not better. Maybe he’ll have better luck than Jared Allen did when he spurned the Seahawks for the Bears. Or not.

    • He is getting paid by the Broncos ..top 2 or 3 chance in the AFC to go to Super bowl. We weren’t spurned. We are just broke and have a broken down offense. Mathis wanted money and a team or rather a O Line to help him look good.

    • It’s always about the money. You think a guy that would have made 5 mil with the Eagles, but was demanding more before he was cut is all of a sudden going to play for 1-1.5 mil the Seahawks could offer him? Why when he can earn at least twice that and with incentives up to 4 times that with Denver and still have a shot at a ring?

And you can’t seriously compare going to Denver as anything like going to the Bears for more money. One is a championship caliber team. The other has Jay Cutler.

    • Peyton’s offensive line last year was horrible. And he does not have Russell’s legs. They had to have Mathis. How is he as a run blocker? I have a sneaking suspicion the Broncos are going all in on C.J. Anderson this year and a big time run game. We’ll see. If it works, that’s when Peyton can really do some damage. Maybe a fourth Super Bowl is possible for him. The defense seems much better than two or three years ago.

  2. “…….James Carpenter, who was lost in free agency.” You’re too kind Art….too kind. I would have re-written that to say “……James Carpenter, who was told not to let the door hit him on the way out by the Seahawks…” But that’s just me
