The Seahawks had a bit of a surprise in the first round of cuts the team announced Monday afternoon from its 90-man roster: C Lemuel Jeanpierre, a sixth-year veteran who was in the middle of the scrum to replace traded Max Unger. Drew Nowak, a three-year vet who was on the practice squad a year ago, apparently has won the starting job.
That leaves Seattle with third-year center Patrick Lewis backing up Nowak — unless the club attempts to deal for a veteran.
Jeanpierre, 28, played in 53 games for the Seahawks since 2011, including 11 starts, three in the past season when Unger was injured.
Also moved was WR Kevin Norwood, who was earlier Monday reported to have been cut, but instead was traded to the Carolina Panthers for an undisclosed conditional 2017 draft choice.
Norwood, a fourth-round draft pick in 2014 out of Alabama who was injured much of last season and failed to make a mark in training camp.
In Seattle’s first three exhibition games, Norwood had two catches for 18 yards. Last season, limited by foot problems, he had nine catches for 102 yards.
The coaching staff saw the 6-2, 200-pound Norwood as a reliable possession receiver, but the receiver position had fresh competition this summer from converted QB B.J. Daniels, as well as third-round draftee Tyler Lockett and free agents — and former Washington Huskies — Kevin Smith and Kasen Williams.
Norwood was one of three choices in the fourth round, which also included DT Cassius Marsh and LB Kevin Pierre-Louis. Previous cuts from 2014 were DL Jimmy Staten, OT Garrett Scott and fullback Kiero Small.
All teams must be down to 75 players by 1 p.m. Tuesday. The Seahawks announced 14 moves Monday, then concluded the Norwood deal after word was out that he would be cut.
Jeanpierre’s contract was terminated, along with DT Anthony Smith.
Another eight were waived, none surprising: OT Jesse Davis, CB George Farmer, WR Deshon Foxx, WR Deontay Greenberry, CB Keelan Johnson, LB Quayshawn Nealy, DE Greg Scruggs, S Ty Zimmerman.
Only Scruggs was a draftee, s seventh-rounder in 2012.
Two players were waived with an injury settlement: FB Brandon Cottom and CB Triston Wade.
Placed on injured reserve, physically unable to perform (PUP) were CB Jeremy Lane and WR Paul Richardson. That means they are ineligible to play for the regular season’s first six weeks.
The Seahawks’ final preseason game is 7 p.m. Thursday at the Clink against Oakland. Final cutdown to the 53-man roster must be done by 1 p.m. PT Saturday. A 10-man practice squad will be selected starting Sunday.

Latest reports are that this is in error, at least right now. Per Adam Caplan, the “Seahawks have not cut WR Kevin Norwood, source said. I imagine that they would try to trade him first if they’re planning on cutting him.”
He’s going to Carolina.
Story updated. Seahawks let it be known they were cutting him, then got inquiries from teams. Going to Carolina for a 2017 conditional pick if he makes the team, likely a seventh-rounder.

I thought Lewis would go before Jeanpierre. Anyway, the next round of cuts will be tough. Hope Smith and Williams either make it or the practice squad.
