An appeals court Friday reinstated a 2014 domestic violence case against U.S. National Women’s Team and Seattle Reign goalkeeper Hope Solo, a Kirkland resident. Solo was originally charged with attacking her half-sister and a nephew in June 2014 and charged with two counts of fourth-degree domestic violence. A judge dismissed the charges in January, a week before Solo was scheduled to stand trial.
The reinstatement of charges Friday angered Solo’s attorney, Todd Maybrown, who said he would appeal.
“We are shocked and disappointed by the judge’s ruling,” Maybrown said. “However, we maintain our position that the charges in this case should have never been filed, that the original court’s ruling of dismissal of this case was correct, and we plan to file an appeal of today’s decision with the Court of Appeals.”
In maintaining Solo’s innocence, Maybrown argued that the alleged victims had been uncooperative during pre-trial investigation. Maybrown also claimed the alleged victims failed to show up for scheduled interviews and changed their stories about the night in question. Maybrown made a motion to dismiss the case, based on that point.
But prosecutors disagreed, saying the alleged victims did cooperate. After the judge dismissed charges in January, Kirkland prosecutors appealed, leading to Friday’s decision.
No trial date has been set.
Solo, a former star at the University of Washington, and the Reign lost the National Women’s Soccer League championship game Thursday night in Portland to Kansas City, 1-0.
