After the NFL Network reported Monday that the Seahawks were going to sign CB Crezdon Butler, a 28-year-old vagabond about to join his seventh team, the Seahawks Tuesday waived WR B.J. Daniels and rookie RB Rod Smith.
With CB Tharold Simon placed on injured reserve Saturday because of a toe that needs surgery and CB Marcus Burley in a cast after surgery to fix a broken thumb, the Seahawks are desperate for depth in the secondary.
Butler (6-1, 191) was cut from the Detroit Lions at the end of training camp. A fifth-round draft pick from Clemson by the Steelers in 2010, Butler played in 36 career games, none as a starter.
Smith carried twice for five yards Sunday in Cincinnati after he was brought up from the practice squad when Marshawn Lynch didn’t make the trip because of a strained hamstring. If Smith clears waivers, he could re-sign to the Seahawks practice squad.
The same thing could happen with Daniels, who converted from quarterback to wide receiver and had a good preseason, but had only one catch in the regular season.
WR draftee Paul Richardson is eligible to come off the physically unable to perform list next week and may fill that spot.
