According to ESPN, the Mariners are set to hire former Washington Nationals (2007-09) and Cleveland Indians (2010-12) manager Manny Acta as their third base coach. The 46-year-old Acta will become the third new member of new manager Scott Servais’s coaching staff, joining bench coach Tim Bogar and pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre Jr.

Hitting coach Edgar Martinez is the one holdover from Lloyd McClendon’s staff. First base/infield coach Chris Woodward last week declined an offer to return because he wants to be closer to his family in Florida.

Acta, who most recently served as an ESPN analyst, also managed in the Dominican Winter League, and managed the Dominican Republic at the 2006 World Baseball Classic. Acta was a coach with the Montreal Expos (2002-04) and New York Mets (2004-06).

Acta had his best year as a manager with Cleveland in 2011, when the Indians went 80-82.

  1. There were rumors of Dan Wilson being considered for that position. Hopefully he’ll find a way to be with the club beyond being a roving instructor.

    • The Recycling 95 Movement may have finally been eclipsed, transcended and subsumed by an actual baseball guy at the helm. If Lincoln can keep his mitts off the baseball team and all of its operational employees there is a chance the And Who Can Forget Chris Bosio’s No Hitter and the EveryBody Scores time machine babble and management strategy could finally bite the dust. Let’s hope hires are made for demonstrated skills and fitting the new organizational culture and not to recall the ancient days of ’95 to fuel ticket sales.

      • Agreed. The club likes to relive the ’95 season every year. I think they do that more than the 2001 season. Enough’s enough. Time to move forward.
