As part of a partial remake of his football staff that lost two coaches, University of Washington coach Chris Petersen promoted three assistants: Bush Hamdan is wide receivers coach and pass game coordinator, Jimmy Lake was promoted to co-defensive coordinator and Bob Gregory has added special teams coordinator to his job titles.
Hamdan, who was the offense’s quality control coach in 2015, takes over for Brent Pease, who was fired Dec. 4. Hamdan had been interim receivers coach as the Huskies prepare for the Heart of Dallas Bowl Dec. 26. He was a backup quarterback for three years at Boise State under Petersen (2006-2008), then held jobs at Colorado, Maryland, Sacramento State, Florida, Arkansas State and Davidson.
Lake, the defensive backs coach, will become co-defensive coordinator with Pete Kwiatkowski. Gregory will take on the special teams tasks that were the responsibility of Jeff Choate, who will become the head coach at Montana State after the Huskies bowl game. Petersen has yet to fill Choate’s defensive-line position.
Lake and Gregory came with Petersen from Boise State in 2013. Petersen, who had his deal extended to 2020, will make decisions on the remaining assistants before their contracts expire Jan. 31.
