The Mariners Tuesday acquired 25-year-old RHP Joe Wieland, who spent the majority of last season with AAA Oklahoma, from the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for minor league INF Erick Mejia. To make room on their 40-man roster, the Mariners designated RHP A.J. Schugel for assignment.
Wieland went 10-5 with a 4.59 ERA with 92 strikeouts in 22 games with Oklahoma, including 21 starts. He also made two starts for the Dodgers, going 0-1 with an 8.31 ERA with four strikeouts.
In three MLB seasons with San Diego (2013-14) and Los Angeles-NL (2015), he has combined to go 1-5 with a 5.85 ERA with 36 strikeouts in 11 games, including nine starts. In his minor league career, he is 45-27 with a 3.52 ERA with 536 strikeouts in 117 games, including 107 starts.
Wieland was selected by Texas in the fourth round of the 2008 draft out of Bishop Manogue High School in Reno.
Mejia, 21, spent the majority of last season with Short A Everett, but also appeared in games with A Clinton, Rookie AZL Mariners and AAA Tacoma, combining to bat .282 with 34 runs, 16 RBIs and 20 stolen bases in 51 games. He also had one stint on the disabled with a left shoulder strain. Mejia was signed by Seattle as a non-drafted international free agent in 2012.
Schugel, 26, was claimed off waivers from Arizona Dec. 16. He made his debut with Arizona last year, posting a 5.00 ERA in five relief appearances. In six minor league seasons in the Angels and Diamondbacks organizations, he is 32-34 with a 4.04 ERA. He was drafted by the Angels in the 25th round in 2010 out of Central Arizona College.
