C Chris Iannetta snapped a 1-1 tie with a two-run homer in the fifth and the the Mariners  went on to a 7-1 victory over New York Friday night to open a three-game series at Yankee Stadium (box). Five Seattle pitchers, led by starter Nathan Karns, limited the Yankees to six hits as the Mariners (4-6) notched their second win in a row to blot the grim memory of a five-game losing streak.

Essential moments

In the fourth, New York had runners (Dustin Ackley and Starlin Castro) at second and third with no outs. Karns (1-1, 4.50) struck out Didi Gregorious (swinging), Chase Headley (looking) and Jacoby Ellsbury (looking). In the sixth, the Yankees loaded the bases with two outs. But reliever Vidal Nuno induced Mark Teixeira into a ground ball out, preserving a 4-1 lead.

Hitters

The Mariners scored at least one run in each of the last six innings and cranked out a season-high 12 hits, eight off Yankees starter and loser Luis Severino (0-2, 5.91) . . . In addition to the two-run homer, Iannetta had two singles, finishing 3-for-3 with three RBIs and a walk. He’s hitting .320 a year after Seattle’s catchers collectively batted .184 . . . Robinson Cano went 2-for-4 and drove in Seattle’s first run in the fourth  . . .  Franklin Gutierrez came off the bench as a pinch hitter for Seth Smith and had two RBIs . . . Nelson Cruz went 2-for-4, as did Adam Lind, who drove in a run . . . Nori Aoki, Kyle Seager and Leonys Martins were the only Mariners who failed to hit . . . Seattle entered the game 10-for-53 (.188) with runners in scoring position,  and went 3-for-13 (.230).

Pitchers

Karns became the first Mariners starter to get a win, working five innings while allowing five hits, including Brent Gardner’s solo homer in the first. Karns struck out seven and walked four, tossing 101 pitches . . . Relievers Nuno, Joel Peralta and Mike Montgomery did not allow a hit in a combined 3.1 innings . . . The Yankees were 0-for-12 with runners in scoring position.

Words

“We played a nice ball game. Offensively, we just did a nice job, and our bullpen came through as well. (Nathan) Karns really hung in there, didn’t give in and got through it. He made the pitches with his fastball deep in counts. Just a really good night for Chris Iannetta. This was not just one or two guys in the middle of the lineup coming through. We had everybody contributing.” — Scott Servais, Mariners manager

Noteworthy

The Mariners play two more in New York Saturday and Sunday, three in Cleveland and three in Anaheim . . . Former Mariner Dustin Ackley served as New York’s designated hitter and went 0-for-2 with a walk before he was lifted for a pinch hitter. Ackley has yet to collect a hit this season . . . The Mariners, who went 1-5 on their recent home stand, are 3-1 on the road . . . Every player in the game wore uniform No. 42 to commemorate Jackie Robinson Day.

Next

The series’ second game starts at 10:05 a.m., PT. Felix Hernandez (0-1, 0.69 and 6-2 in his career at Yankee Stadium)  seeks his first win.  C.C. Sabathia (1-0, 4.50) goes for the Yanks. Sunday also is 10:05 a.m. start.

  1. Miller/LAMO Morrison are 4-57 with 3 total bases, 1 extra base hit & 21K’s are off to a rip-roaring start. Good not to have those bums in the lineup anymore, not to mention Zunino/Jokely. This team is obviously at least league average offensively on the road if not better, so their problems at Safeco have to be mental. Adam Lind is obviously going to hit, I believe even at Safeco & the other pieces acquired are just better then the bums Trader Jack was always running out there. Maybe Corey Hart should have been wearing his “sunglasses at night” while in the batters box.
