The Mariners Wednesday recalled RHP Cody Martin from AAA Tacoma and made room on the active roster by designating for assignment 40-year-old RHP Joel Peralta. Martin was to be available to the Mariners Wednesday night when they play the second of two against the San Diego Padres at Petco Park.
The 26-year-old Martin went 5-3 with a 5.67 ERA with 45 strikeouts in 12 games, including eight starts, with the Rainiers. In his last five appearances, including one start, he is 1-1 with a 3.38 ERA with 10 strikeouts. He began the season in the starting rotation, going 4-2 with a 6.37 ERA with 35 strikeouts in seven starts.
Martin made his MLB debut in 2015 with Atlanta and Oakland, going 2-5 with a 7.92 ERA with 27 strikeouts in 25 games, including two starts. In parts of six minor league seasons, he is 36-32 with a 3.44 ERA with 587 strikeouts in 130 games, including 92 starts. He was drafted by Atlanta in the seventh round of the 2011 draft out of Gonzaga University in Spokane.
Peralta, 40, went 1-0 with a 5.40 ERA with 28 strikeouts in 26 relief appearances this season. Peralta, scorched for three runs in 1.1 innings Tuesday night in San Diego, signed with Seattle as a free agent Feb. 9 and made the Opening Day roster after entering spring training as a non-roster invitee.
LHP Wade Miley (5-1, 4.95) will throw for Seattle Wednesday night opposite RHP Colin Rea (3-2, 4.47).

I’m a little surprised. Peralta can still throw over 90. I doubt any teams will take a flyer on him if the M’s designated him and I also doubt he’ll go to Tacoma. If the rumors about the M’s going after Matt Kemp are true I think they need bullpen help more.
