Roy to coach Nathan Hale HS; and its new star?

Former University of Washington star Brandon Roy is the new head coach at what was perhaps the worst basketball program in Seattle’s 3A Metro League, Nathan Hale High School. But he may have one of the nation’s best players in the fall, Michael Porter Jr., a prized recruiting target of the Huskies, who is transferring in for his senior season.

Porter’s father, Michael Sr., is the new assistant coach at University of Washington under Lorenzo Romar, who had Roy in the Garfield High grad’s final three seasons at UW, where he became a first-team All-America selection.

If this all seems a little hoops-incestuous, it is. Porter Jr.’s younger brother, Jontay, a junior to be, is joining his brother in enrolling at Hale. Jontay reportedly has committed orally to UW.

Porter Jr., 6-9 and 215, is ranked as the the No. 2 recruit in the 2017 class by Rivals.com, which first reported the story. As a junior, Porter led Tolton High School (Columbia, MO.) to a 26-3 record and a state championship. Hale last season was 3-18 overall and 1-14 in Metro.

Porter Sr., reportedly tweeted last week that his eldest son had narrow his college choices to UW, Missouri, Virginia, Indiana and Oklahoma. The tweet is no longer in his timeline.

Roy was the sixth pick of the first round by the Portland Trail Blazers in the NBA draft of 2006, and went on to a six-year career that included three All-Star Game selections before knee injuries short-circuited his time.

The Huskies Thursday had two players from last season, freshmen Marquese Chriss and Dejounte Murray, taken in the first round of the draft.
