The ooga horns have gone off around the Mariners, prompting a hasty roster shuffle to cover numerous pitching injuries that have helped send the club below .500 (36-37) prior to Friday’s interleague series at Safeco against the St.Louis Cardinals.

As expected, LHP Wade LeBlanc, 31, acquired Tuesday from Toronto, was called up from Tacoma to start Friday night’s game despite not having pitched in the majors since 2014.

A starter and reliever were also called up from Tacoma, RHP Donn Roach and LHP David Rollins.

Sent down to the Rainiers were LF Norichika Aoki and RHP Tom Wilhelmsen.

Added to the 15-day disabled list was rookie RHP Adrian Sampson (flexor bundle strain).  Moved from the 15-day to the 60-day DL was reliever Tony Zych.

The moves filled the 40-man roster, which had an unplanned vacancy Thursday when minor-league OF Boog Powell was suspended for 80 games after a second violation of MLB’s policy against performance-enhancing drugs.

The one bit of good health news for the Mariners was that starter Taijuan Walker did not go on the disabled list after being removed early in his past two starts because of a sore foot tendon. He his next start was pushed back to Thursday.

“We’re in dire need of fresh arms,” general manager Jerry Dipoto told The News Tribune Friday, “if even just to allow the current ’pen guys to reset after (Thursday), not to mention the last three weeks.”

Mariners relievers have 77.1 IP in June, most in the American League and third-most in the majors behind Pittsburgh (81.2) and Philadelphia (80.2). Seattle’s bullpen has a 4.31 ERA this month, but over the last nine games, posted a 2.34 ERA. The unit tossed 6.0+ innings in three of the past nine games since June 15.

Already on the DL were Felix Hernandez and Wade Miley. Coupled with Walker’s problems, short outings for starters and a bad game from Hisashi Iwakuma, the bullpen was exhausted. Then came the Thursday debacle in Detroit when Sampson, an emergency starter called up from AAA, couldn’t pitch at all because of a sore elbow.

Five relievers had to eat 9.2 innings of a 5-4 loss in Detroit that ended the season’s longest road trip at 2-8.

LeBlanc was 7-2 with a 1.71 ERA  in 14 starts, including 12 quality starts, with AAA Buffalo this season. The 6-foot-3, 209-pound lefty has limited opponents to a .246 average, while walking 21 and striking out 85. He’s a veteran of seven big-league seasons with San Diego (2008-11), Miami (2012-13), Houston (2013), Los Angeles-AL (2014) and New York-AL (2014).

Roach, 26, a former third-round draft pick of the 2010 Angels, was 4-4 with a 4.26 ERA in 14 starts, including seven quality starts, at Tacoma. The 6-foot, 200-pound right-hander has allowed 90 hits in 82.1 innings, walking 15 and striking out 46.

Over his last eight starts, Roach is 2-2 with a 2.04 ERA. During the stretch, among qualifying pitchers in the PCL, he ranked T2 in innings pitched (53),  fourth in ERA (2.04), fifth in WHIP (0.98), T7 in strikeouts (37)  and eighth in average (.223).

Rollins, also 26, had one outing in Boston during the road trip when he had 1.1 hitless IP. In Tacoma, he was 2-0 with a 2.05 ERA (7 ER, 30.2 IP) with 26 strikeouts and 1 walk in 24 games.

Wilhelmsen, 32, picked up as a free agent after being cut by the Rangers, pitched one inning on the road trip and is being sent to Tacoma for some conditioning. Other than the single inningm he hadn’t pitched since June 13.

Zych is eligible to come off the DL July 1.

Aoki, the every-day left fielder, was 10 for his past 43 at-bats and had minor league options.

“We didn’t have a lot of ways to go about this, and fortunately, he did have options left,” Mariners manager Scott Servais said before the game.

Aoki, who must remain in Tacoma at least 10 days, was not replaced because the pitching crisis has forced the Mariners to run one short among position players.

  1. “Turn off the lights, the party’s over”. Not just a tribute to Dandy Don.
Though I am all for a successful M’s year, I held off buying tickets and now will most likely pass until next year, unless there is some incredible change.
I will say this: They at least had a good record past Memorial Day this year, so there was some progress.
Same old, same old, and that’s simply a shame.

    • They were 10 games above five hundred, so that suggests contending talent. But this roster has proven too thin to survive this many injuries.

  2. I imagine the move with Aoki is more about sending a message to him more so than anything else. I doubt that he’s less valuable than O’Malley who also has options. Though Aoki’s average is, well, average his OBP has climbed his last six games from .319 to .323 and he isn’t the only player to see his stats decline in June. Though Jerry is determined to not see the club go into it’s typical June swoon I can’t help but feel as though this is a patchwork team at this point. Not what you want to see taking the field against the Cardinals.

    • Aoki is hitting lefties poorly, and Smith/Gutierrez platoon is a better offensive choice. It’s for a minimum of 10 days, and they needed a roster spot. O’Malley can play multiple positions.

OK, I have to stop screaming at my TV. One way to stop the yelling, is for the manager to back up his less that ;proven reliever, with just a one run lead. I can’t count the number of times that Servais has either left his starter out there too long, or not backed his reliever in a tight game. Send him back to wherever he came.
