After hitting a cop following an altercation outside a San Antonio hotel Dec. 31, Seahawks QB Trevone Boykin pleaded no contest Thursday to a misdemeanor charge of resisting arrest and avoided any jail time that would have kept him out of Seahawks training camp.

The Bexar County district attorney’s office told NFL Media that as part of his plea agreement, Boykin was sentenced to a year of probation and must attend alcohol awareness and anger management classes as part of the terms of his probation.

He also was ordered to pay a $1,500 fine, submit an apology letter to the arresting officer and complete 80 hours of community service.

Boykin was arrested prior to Texas Christian’s Alamo Bowl game against Oregon after a disturbance in a bar with other customers led to his ejection. He encountered police on the street and struck an officer.

He was arrested and posted a $5,000 bond. Coaches suspended him from what was the final game of his career in college, where he supplanted Andy Dalton as TCU’s top career passer.

Until the plea deal, Boykin was facing a charge of assaulting a public servant, a third-degree felony, punishable by up to a year in jail.

Boykin, who finished 10th in the Heisman Trophy voting, went undrafted in April and signed with the Seahawks as a free agent. He played well enough in practice to become the likely No. 2 quarterback behind Russell Wilson. The only other QB on the roster is another rookie, former Skyline High School star Jake Heaps.

Former backup Tarvaris Jackson is a free agent and was arrested in Florida on a charge of assaulting his wife by threatening her with a run.

Training camp opens July 30.

  1. As I understand it, Boykin was trying to hit someone other than the police officer. Tempers were high. Sounds like enough punishment and embarrassment, I’m sure he regrets it. Let’s play some ball . . .

  2. The Hawks have replaced a backup QB who assaulted his wife with a backup QB who assaulted a cop. That’s definitely an upgrade, I’d say.
