The Mariners Monday recalled OF Guillermo Heredia from AAA Tacoma and placed RHP Drew Storen on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to Aug. 20) with right shoulder inflammation. The 25-year-old Heredia was available Monday night when Seattle began a three-game series against the New York Yankees at Safeco Field.
Heredia hit .312 with 27 runs, six doubles, one triple, two home runs, 13 RBIs and a .378 on-base percentage in 35 games with the Rainiers. Heredia also hit .280 with one homer and three RBIs in 12 games with Seattle after being called up from Tacoma July 29.
Heredia was signed to an MLB contract by Seattle March 1 as an international free agent. He played in Cuba from 2009-14.
Storen, 28, is 3-3 with three saves and a 5.77 in 48 combined relief appearances with Toronto and Seattle this season. Storen was acquired from the Blue Jays in exchange for RHP Joaquin Benoit July 26.
In 10 appearances with the Mariners, Storen is 2-0 with a 4.35 ERA. He has held opponents scoreless in eight of his past nine outings and limited opponents to one run or fewer in each of the past nine.
The Mariners (66-57) will send RHP Cody Martin (1-2, 3.14) to start opposite former Mariner Michael Pineda (6-10, 4.89). The Mariners are six games behind the Texas Rangers (73-52) in the AL West race and one game behind Baltimore (67-56) for the second wild card spot.
The Mariners won a series at Yankee Stadium 2-1.
