The Mariners Tuesday recalled RHP Tony Zych from his rehab assignment with AAA Tacoma and activated him from the 60-day disabled list. In a corresponding move, Seattle optioned INF/OF Stefen Romero to the Rainiers. Zych will be available for the middle game of a three-game set with the New York Yankees at 7:10 p.m. Tuesday.
The 26-year-old Zych made four rehab appearances with the AZL Mariners, AA Jackson and Tacoma, pitching a combined four scoreless innings, with two hits, two walks and six strikeouts. He went on the 15-day DL May 3 with rotator cuff tendinitis in his right shoulder and was transferred to the 60-day DL June 24.
The 6-foot-3, 190 pound right-hander opened the season with Seattle, going 1-0 with 3.00 ERA in 10 relief appearances. He recorded his first career win in the Mariners’ 10-7, 10-inning victory over the Indians April 21.
Zych was acquired by Seattle in a minor league trade for cash from the Chicago Cubs April 2, 2015.
Romero, 27, hit .235 with three RBIs in nine games with Seattle this season. Prior to his recall from Tacoma Aug. 19, Romero was hitting .314 for the Rainiers. He was a starting outfielder in the Pacific Coast League All-Star Game.
RHP Taijuan Walker (4-7, 4.10), called up earlier Tuesday from Tacoma, will throw for Seattle (67-57) Tuesday night opposite LHP C.C. Sabathia (7-10, 4.49).
