The Seahawks Monday confirmed that they have cut loose veteran CB Brandon Browner, an original member of the “Legion of Boom,” 24 hours ahead the mandatory paring (1 p.m. PT Tuesday) of the roster from 90 to 75 players. Browner, whom Seattle had been auditioning as a hybrid nickel/safety, did not advance beyond the third team in his second go-around with the Seahawks.
Seattle signed the 32-year-old Browner in March after his release by the New Orleans Saints. He played for the Seahawks from 2011-13 and was a member of the Super Bowl champions following the 2013 season, although he did not play in the 43-8 victory over Denver in the title game.
Browner became a free agent after that game and Seattle opted not to re-sign him after he sustained a series of injuries and was suspended for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy.
Browner signed with New England and was involved in the key play of Super Bowl XLIX, a goal-line interception of QB Russell Wilson by CB Malcolm Butler with 26 seconds remaining and the Seahawks a yard away from the winning score. Browner provided key interference on WR Jermaine Kearse that enabled Butler to snatch the ball away from Ricardo Lockette and preserve New England’s 28-24 victory.
After two seasons with the Patriots, Browner signed with the Saints. He started all 16 games last year and led the NFL in penalties. Following the 2015 season, Browner signed a one-year contract with the Seattle for the veteran minimum of $600,000.
The Seahawks used Browner, an Oregon State grad who first played in the Canadian Football League, as a backup safety in their first three preseason games. But younger players such as SS Kelcie McCray and CB Tyvis Powell, an undrafted rookie from Ohio State, stood out.
So Seattle went o-for-2 so far in its attempt to pull from its past. Another member of the Super Bowl champions, DE Chris Clemons, was also signed as a free agent. But before training camp began, Clemons, 34, announced his retirement.
Another 2013 throwback signee, DT Tony McDaniel, was re-signed during training camp and showed enough that he seems likely to stick past the Tuesday cutdown.
Seattle plays its final preseason game at 7 p.m. PT Thursday night in Oakland (KCPQ Ch. 13).
Other roster moves
The Seahawks Monday waived FB Kyle Coleman, WR Montario Hunter, DE DeAngelo Tyson and WR Deshon Foxx. They also placed DT Sealver Siliga on injured reserve.

The Hawks have not been kind to the over 30 crowd during the Pete Carroll era. Unless you really show something Pete goes with the younger player every time. Not sure if Brandon can join another team at this point.
