The Mariners Wednesday acquired OF Ben Gamel, the International League’s most valuable player, from the New York Yankees in exchange for two teenage pitching propects, RHPs Jio Orozco and Juan De Paula. Gamel, 24, who has spent the year with AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in the Yankees organization, will be added to the major league roster Friday, when rosters expand.
Gamel hit .308 with 80 runs, 51 RBIs and 19 stolen bases in 116 games with Scranton. Among IL leaders, he ranks first in runs (80), third in hits (149) and sixth in batting (.308).
The left-handed hitter made his MLB debut with the Yankees as a defensive replacement May 6 vs. Boston. In six games with New York, Gamel went 1-for-8.
In 2015, Gamel was named IL Rookie of the Year after batting .300 with 10 home runs and 64 RBIs. A native of Neptune Beach, FL., Gamel was selected by the Yankees in the 10th round of the 2010 draft out of Bishop Kenny High School in Jacksonville.
De Paula, 18, went 1-2 with a 3.07 ERA in 11 games with the AZL Mariners. The right-hander was signed as a non-drafted free-agent July 2, 2014.
Orozco, 19, went 2-2 in 12 games with the AZL Mariners. The right-hander was Seattle’s 14th-round selection in the 2015 draft out of Salpointe Catholic (AZ.) High School.
