Tampa Bay TE Austin-Seferian Jenkins, a former University of Washington star, was arrested in Tampa on suspicion of driving while under the influence, the Florida Highway Patrol said in a news release Friday morning. It was his second DUI arrest following one as a Husky in 2013.

NFL.com reported Friday that the Bucs were about to release Seferian-Jenkins, who confirmed it via his Twitter account:

“By the time we found out (about the arrest), we were into meetings this morning and we’ve been on the practice field,” Bucs coach Dirk Koetter was quoted as saying on the team’s website Friday. “(General manager) Jason (Licht) and I will be getting together this afternoon and whatever is going to happen will be forthcoming.”

According to the release, trooper Tabarie Sullivan was traveling in his patrol car when he saw Seferian-Jenkins enter southbound Interstate 275 going between 75 and 80 mph. The release says the vehicle then cut off the trooper’s cruiser and began weaving back and forth.

Seferian-Jenkins is being charged with DUI and violation of an ignition interlock device restriction from an arrest in Seattle. He refused a breath test at the Hillsborough County Jail.

Seferian-Jenkins, a native of Fox Island and a graduate of Gig Harbor High School, set multiple UW single-season and career records for receptions, receiving yards and touchdowns for tight ends. But he spent a day jail after pleading guilty to drunk driving after the car he was driving crashed in an accident near campus in March 2013.

His blood-alcohol level was reported to be 0.18 percent, more that twice the state’s legal limit.

He was drafted by the Buccaneers in the second round, 38th overall, in 2014, but has started only 12 games, none this season, and has 45 career receptions. He caught a 30-yard touchdown in the Buccaneers’ season-opening win at Atlanta.

At a practice in June, Koetter dismissed Seferian-Jenkins, after which he argued with heckling fans, and later apologized.

  1. What is it with UW TEs that go to Tampa Bay? Both Jeremy Stevens and ASJ continue to bring their legal issues with them. A shame…such a waste of talent in both instances.

  2. Wow – Literally MILLIONS down the drain. Amazing these guys don’t check themselves in treatment. Where is his family? The team? etc? Ridiculous.

      • I grew up on Irish Capitol Hill so I know all too well the Irish Curse.
Yet it doesn’t excuse one with the means to check into a facility and try to get well.
