The Mariners Monday provided updates on three players who have undergone recent medical procedures, including Taijuan Walker, the 24-year-old right hander who went 8-11, 4.22 in 25 starts during the 2016 season and figures prominently in the team’s rotation plans.

Walker, a first-round pick by Seattle in 2010, had an arthroscopic procedure Monday, performed by Dr. Nicholas Siebert in Seattle, to remove a bone fragment on his right ankle. Walker begins his rehab immediately and is expected to be ready for full activity at the start of spring training.

RHP Steve Cishek, who served in closer and set-up roles last year, had surgery Oct. 12. Performed by Dr. Thomas Bird in Nashville, it was to repair a torn labrum in his left hip. Cishek is expected to need four to six months of rehabilitation.

RHP Tony Zych had surgery Oct. 11 in New York City Dr. Stephen O’Brien, for a right shoulder biceps tendon transfer. The surgery did notinvolve the rotator cuff or capsule in the shoulder. Zych is expected to be ready for the start of spring training.

The Mariners do not have other players scheduled for surgery this off-season.

  1. Wasn’t Zych on the DL for a very long time? Why not have surgery during the season and have enough time to recover?

    • A proper diagnosis might not have been able to have been done until now. Or he sought a second opinion and it was so far from the first that a third was needed.
