The Mariners Wednesday claimed RHP Ryan Weber off waivers from Atlanta, lost RHP Adrian Sampson off waivers to Texas, outrighted C Steve Clevenger, RHP Ryan Cook and LHP Charlie Furbush to the AAA Tacoma Rainiers, and designated C Steve Baron for assignment. Clevenger, Cook and Furbush all have enough service time to elect free agency.
Weber, 26, went 1-1 with a 5.45 ERA in 16 games (two starts) with Atlanta last season. A native of St. Petersburg, FL, he was selected by the Braves in the 22nd round of the 2009 draft out of St. Petersburg College. He made his MLB debut with Atlanta Sept. 8, 2015 at Philadelphia. In parts of two seasons with the Braves, he has compiled a record of 1-4 with a 5.15 ERA.
Sampson went 0-1 with a 7.71 ERA with two strikeouts in his only start with Seattle last season. He had surgery to repair a flexor tendon on his right elbow June 30 and did not pitch again. Sampson, 24, is a Redmond native who was acquired from the Pirates at 2015 midseason for RHP J.A. Happ.
Baron, 25, hit .280 with with three home runs in 67 games for AA Jackson last season. In eight minor league seasons with the Mariners, he hit .234 with 26 home runs and 228 RBIs in 554 games. He was drafted by Seattle in the first round of the 2009 draft out of high school in Miami.
Clevenger, 30, was suspended without pay Sept. 23 for the remainder of the season for a series of tweets in which he called called the Black Lives Matter movement and President Obama “pathetic.” Clevenger came off the suspended list Oct. 31. In 20 starts with Seattle last season, he hit .221 with one home run.
Cook, 29, had Tommy John surgery on his right elbow Oct. 20. He did not appear in an MLB game after being placed on the 60-day disabled list with a strained right latissimus dorsi muscle March 12. He signed with Seattle as a free agent Jan. 7.
Furbush, 30, had surgery to repair a partially torn rotator cuff in his left shoulder Aug. 16 and also did not play last season.
