Freshman Markelle Fultz tallied 35 points, 21 in the second half, as Washington romped to a 104-88 victory over Cal State Fullerton Thursday night in front of 6,284 fans at Alaska Airlines Arena. Fultz’s second consecutive 30-point game helped give the Huskies (1-1) their first victory of the season.
Fultz went 10-for-14 from 2-point range, 3-for-5 beyond the arc and added six assists. His dunk at the 4:20 mark gave UW an 89-78 lead, and a second dunk at 3:46 following a stolen in-bounds pass pushed the margin to 13.
“He has the ability to make everyone else look a little better and he was doing that tonight,” Washington coach Lorenzo Romar said. “It’s almost like he’s computer-generated or something,”
“I think my ability to get to the rim is always open,” Fultz said. “I realized it once I made a couple of threes it opened up the paint even more.”
Four other Huskies scored in double figures, led by David Crisp with 17. Matisse Thybulle added 15, Malik Dime 14 and Dominic Green 11. Dime also had a team-leading eight rebounds and five blocked shots.
Washington led by 11 points at halftime, but the Titans pulled even at 68. The Huskies scored the next 10 points to ice the game.
The teams combined for 54 fouls (27 each) and 28 turnovers, but the Huskies hit 61.1 percent from the floor to Fullerton’s 50.9 and owned the boards, 36-19.
Tre’ Coggins led Cal State Fullerton (2-1) with 23 points, 17 in the first eight minutes. Jackson Rowe added 16.
The Huskies host Northern Arizona Sunday at 5 p.m. (Pac-12 Networks).
